INTRODUCTION:
HUMALOG 100IU contains Insulin lispro which belongs to the group of medicines called rapid-acting human insulin analog. It is used to treat diabetes mellitus in adults who requires a daily dose of more than 20 units of rapid-acting insulin. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease associated with abnormally high levels of glucose in the blood due to inadequate production of a hormone called insulin (produced by pancreas to metabolize glucose) or inadequate sensitivity of cells to the action of insulin.
Insulin lispro is indicated to improve long-term glycemic control in patients with diabetes. It works more faster than normal human insulin because insulin lispro is closely related to human insulin (hormone made by pancreas). Always consult your doctor before doing any physical activity and be careful about the time intervals between your meals.
This medicine should only be injected with a pre-filled reusable pen. It can be taken within 15 minutes of a meal or soon after a meal. Do not repeatedly inject this medicine at the same site as it may create a lumpy area under your skin. Try to inject the medicine by rotating to its adjacent areas apart from previous sites to prevent skin changes such as lumps under the skin. To prevent the possible transmission of disease, avoid sharing your needles or pen and only use only a new needle each time.
Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol while taking this medicine. Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels, because this medicine may cause hypoglycemia which may put your life in danger. The most common side effect of this medicine is application site redness, itching or swelling. Before taking this medicine inform your doctor if you have any kidney, liver or heart disease.
USES OF HUMALOG 100IU:
Treats diabetes mellitus in adults
HOW HUMALOG 100IU WORKS:
Insulin lispro binds to the alpha subunit of insulin receptor and stimulates the tyrosine kinase activity. This stimulation causes phosphorylation of various insulin receptor substrates proteins. This in turn, leads to the activation of downstream signaling molecules including PI3 kinase and Akt, which plays a critical role in glucose metabolism.
